The Section LS3M was established by the merger of the research groups Microbiology, Veterinary Anatomy and Immunology, Biochemistry and Animal Genetics with the aim of promoting synergies between the different SSDs in addressing common scientific challenges from the perspective of "One Health".

The Section is organized into two macro-areas: Agri-Food-Environmental Microbiology and Life Science Unit, which is composed of the Veterinary Anatomy, General Veterinary Pathology,Biochemistry and the Animal Biotechnology Units. This structure enables an integrated, collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach to support both basic and applied research in the two main areas of interest. 1. The focus of the Agri-Food-Environmental Microbiology Unit is on the microbiological control and quality improvement of sustainable agri-food production with a focus on reducing environmental impact and maintenance of biodiversity. 2. The focus of Life Science Unit is on understanding specific biochemical, biological, pathological and immunological phenomena in animals and humans and the relationship between microbiota and host.

The main goal of the Section is to serve as a valid scientific reference point across various agri-food chains and productions systems, addressing maturation processes, microbial-induced environmental and modulation phenomena, and understanding the metabolic events that regulate changes in plant and animal organisms.
