Platform laboratory for environmental chemical characterization (PLCA)

Earth is not an inheritance from our fathers, but a loan from our children (Navajo proverb).
Chemistry is the art of separating, weighing, and distinguishing: these are three exercises that are also useful for those who are about to describe facts or give substance to their imagination (Primo Levi).
We are a university technology platform dedicated to environmental chemical characterization, a field that encompasses environmental restoration, biodiversity protection, the impacts of human activities, and the ecological and energy transition, in line with the goals of the 2030 Agenda. We leverage expertise from the DI4A, DPIA, and DIUM Departments, represented in our Technical Scientific Committee, and we promote the interdisciplinary and interdepartmental use of analytical instrumentation. We support research, teaching, and national and international project development.
All these topics are at the heart of national and international projects, such as PRIN, PNRR and Horizon Europe projects, etc. Environmental chemical characterization is a central aspect for many DI4A and DPIA research lines present in PSA 22-25 (PSD Di4A: CibiAmo - Nourishing the body and mind, Plant Science; PSD DPIA: ESPeRT - Energy, Sustainability of production processes and Territorial Resilience for the Ecological Transition) and can become an important fulcrum for interdisciplinary collaborations both within the University and involving external research groups and/or industrial entities, thus fueling the possibility of attracting research funds for national and/or international projects and promoting new lines of research that can attract young scholars for theses and PhDs, contributing to the training and dissemination of environmental issues.
We carry out analytical and research activities using the main techniques dedicated to environmental chemical characterization, including:
- NMR spectroscopy;
- chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS, HPLC-MS);
- elemental and isotopic analysis (CHNSO, IRMS);
- X-ray analysis (XRD, XRF);
- water and wastewater analysis (TOC, AOX/EOX, UV-Vis, benchtop treatment systems).
These techniques allow us to characterize environmental and agri-food matrices, identify and quantify compounds, study the chemical composition and evaluate treatment processes.
Services
We offer to companies and organizations:
- specialized chemical analyses of environmental matrices, materials, and agri-food products;
- dedicated characterizations using NMR, GC-MS, HPLC-MS, elemental and isotopic analysis, XRD, and XRF;
- water and wastewater analyses and testing with dedicated instruments and experimental facilities;
- technical and scientific support in selecting analytical techniques and interpreting results;
- collaborations for research and innovation projects in the environmental, agri-food, and industrial sectors.
