Organization
The ASB PhD School selects applicant once a year. The duration of the course is usually 3 years and terminates with the submission of a written thesis defended in front of a board of examiners appointed 'ad hoc', who are not members of the school.
The school accept 12 students per year. Scholarships are granted to the first 6 students who are ranked better on the admission list. Scholarship includes a salary of 13.638 Euro per year (before taxes), which is provided for 3 years.
Short and informal courses on basic topics in biology and agriculture, on chromatographic separation, microscopy, molecular protocols, bioinformatics, scientific writing and communication are offered to the PhD students with the intent of providing them with the tools suitable for their lab work and thesis writing. Examination is not foreseen.
Students are encouraged to spend at least 6 months during their PhD in foreign partner labs. Usually they can benefit of reimbursement for traveling to the partner institution.

Italian applicants are invited to an oral examination, while foreign students are exempt but are expected to submit the application form, their curriculum, academic records, grades earned throughout their university studies, awards received, reference letters, a list of scientific publications, participation at specialization courses, all which could help evaluate their scientific profile and background.
